Charlotte Temple


Written in 1794, it was America's first best-selling novel in the earliest years of the Republic. So for that reason, it is an interesting historical document. It is a cautionary tale. It is no Madame Bovary, but it is a quick read so pretty painless to get through. It is a pretty over-the-top melodrama.

 I read it for my Book Babes reading group, and I cannot imagine that they will like it. We will see.
