"What makes the desert beautiful is that somewhere it hides a well" (The Little Prince by de Saint-Exupéry). My journey to a WELL-adjusted heart, WELL-watered soul, WELL-educated mind, and WELL-tuned body. "Love the Lord your God with all your HEART, and with all your SOUL, and with all your MIND, and with all your STRENGTH" (Mark 12:30-31).

Monday Morning Freewrite
Wow! What a morning! I slept in until 5:50 am this morning, but it was enough time for me to have an hour with the LORD before I met with my first directee at 7 am. She is in Asia so her evening is my early morning.
All I got to say is THERE IS A GOD! I had prayed about what to share. Hemmed and hawed. I wasn't anxious, but he kept saying things to me that seemed like too much. Usually, I like to start with something, and I had an Imaginative Contemplation on the bleeding woman cued up and ready to play, but God also reminded me of a poem. I had that at the ready, but God said to not introduce either of them at the beginning.
But BOTH were part of God's plan. She proceeded to tell her how the story of the bleeding woman ministered to her as she went through the exercises. She had already listened to the link I had provided in my manual of the Exercises. So that is why God had it on my heart, but even how we got to the story of the bleeding woman was a different route than I would have ever expected. It was through a story that she was telling about something else. This was a fantastic story of the healing of two people! I was so encouraged.
I cannot give too much away because my sessions are confidential, but that story led to me feeling God was telling me to challenge her thinking on something. I had a little conversation with God about the fact that the whole thing about direction is that it is not super directive and more companioning. But I felt really strongly the need to speak up about this, and it was AMAZING what this brought about in our soul-to-soul time.
Then the poem totally fit. Totally fit.
He makes all things fit together. He was THERE. I am in AWE.
The next directee was 20 minutes later. God led me to the Spiritual Location Exercise. I love that one, and I usually do it upfront with people to get a feel for where they are at, but I had never done this with her. It was a very good time. She shared about an experience she had with God. While she was sharing, God brought a specific verse of Scripture to mind. She went through her whole story, and at the end of our time, she mentioned that during this time in her life, the same Scripture he had been putting in my head was the Scripture he had given her about starting a ministry 12 years ago. I confirmed it by saying that was the verse in my head the whole time she was sharing!
Then God led me to mention Celtic prayer. She had ALWAYS wanted to explore this. So I played her the Celtic Morning Prayer Music and a wonderful YouTube of the last song in that series. It so touched her.
Just part of my morning. I love doing what I do.
Now on to my "other job" that God is also really confirming things with because I just got a text while I was typing this.
HE IS SO REAL PEOPLE! HE IS SO HERE! NO DOUBT IN MY MIND! Two different people on opposite sides of the globe this morning, but God had these aligned things for both of them. I love co-laboring with HIM in Kingdom work. YAY.

Sunday Morning Freewrite
This is my Sabbath. I have been pretty good about honoring it, either on a Saturday or a Sunday depending on whether things come up for us.
It is always about balance for me. I have all the abundant energy I need for the work that God has for me. Today, I will just rest and connect with God (and my family). The rain is raining hard. I am cozy in my home. Deadlines looming for me. Emails out to others as I wait to move ahead on some of them.
One email sent was automatically answered, and I am grateful. I am teaching on the Instinctual Variants (Subtypes is the popular name, but it really is not descriptive of their function according to Russ Hudson of the Enneagram Institute.) for a Year Two Cohort for Sustainable Faith. I taught on it last year this time, and I think it went well. So, my handouts are all prepared. I just need to put it in a format that I can share on Zoom, which I have always wanted and needed to do. So, I will work on that part of this week.
I also need to make one-two more videos of 20-30 minutes for a girl from one of my OSU Pilates classes (2018). She has created a life-coaching business and wants to have introductory Pilates videos for her students. She has been less consistent at replying. She asked me in January, and I didn't hear from her for six weeks. Then I got a contract and was asked to have my stuff ready in two weeks. Between the time she asked me and when she told me the parameters, my life has gotten incredibly (and deliciously) more full with the Abiding Resources and Testimonials sub-group that I am leading for our Movement.
So, when it rains. It pours. (I am sure I wrote this in a previous freewrite already, but Freewrites are about writing about whatever is on your mind and letting your pen/fingers on a keyboard GO!) In the meantime, I have had three people "out of the blue" want to talk about helping me interpret and utilize their WEPPS scores for the Enneagram, doing a typing interview, and just a "can you call me" about something, but that person is not telling me what that is. All three are people I rarely hear from. So I have had to say, "Not right now" to two out of three of them. I fit in the other one because I had a spiritual direction cancellation.
Anywho, tomorrow, I will finish up the Pilates videos request. I have some I have already done, but she has not told me if that is what she wants. I have two from a former project with OSU and one I made on Friday that was quite fun. I do love making these videos, and I finally got the audio down.
I just got a ping from my friend in Central Asia. I have been wondering how she has been. She moved to another country. That might be better for her.
On a very positive note, ever since Dr. Myers adjusted my back after the massage that made my back go out, I have been pain-free.
Today I am going to read. I am going to spend time with my favorite people (we went for a walk around the hospital last night at dusk). I will also have two Centering Prayer sits with Mercy Center and the Corvallis group. Centering Prayer has been such a nice addition to my customary (many call it "Rule of Life," but Order of the Mustard Seed calls it customary). It is so ... well... CENTERING on God!
I am loving my full life lately.
Oh, one more thing. We spend the last three mornings marveling at what God is doing in one part of the world. PRAISE HIM! I am so encouraged and overwhelmed at His goodness.

Wednesday Morning Freewrite

| I Wholeheartedly Endorse the Imago Christi Discovery Event! |
This is what caught me this morning in my meditation time:
19-21 What
actually took place is this: I tried keeping rules and working my head off to
please God, and it didn’t work. So I quit being a “law man” so that I could
be God’s man. Christ’s life showed me how, and enabled me to
do it. I identified myself completely with him. Indeed, I have been crucified
with Christ. My ego is no longer central. It is no longer important that I
appear righteous before you or have your good opinion, and I am no
longer driven to impress God. Christ lives in me. The life you see me living is
not “mine,” but it is lived by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave
himself for me. I am not going to go back on that.
21 Is it
not clear to you that to go back to that old rule-keeping, peer-pleasing
religion would be an abandonment of everything personal and free in my
relationship with God? I refuse to do that, to repudiate God’s grace. If a
living relationship with God could come by rule-keeping, then Christ died
unnecessarily. (Gal 3:19-21, MSG)
I think this is all about living in harmony with who God made me to be. "The ego is no longer central." I know I have read it in The Message version before, but it just struck me when Carla Harding read it in Lectio365 this morning. This is an old Navigator verse that I memorized in the "Assurance" pack! I love the Navigators. No matter what anyone says, Sheryl Rice modeled contemplative practices to me back in the late 70s. Now they are "all the rage" in many evangelical circles. My best friend, Debbie, and I both sort of look at each other and say, "Well, yes. Doesn't everyone know this?" She was in a Sacred Rhythms class at her church, and I read her workbook where there was a new rhythm introduced, and she wrote in the margins, "Learned in 1979 from ________." Maybe our ministry was different. Maybe it was just Sheryl, but now it is all the rage and a "new" thing for people. (I think it is GREAT though. Read that book if you want an introduction to those Rhythms! I think Celebration of Discipline is also a great introduction to all of this. I love Richard Foster and Renovare too. So many good resources out there now. I am NOT knocking the resources just stating they are not new for everyone.)
But no matter. I am realizing that I just need to live FREE and FLY!
So today, I am going to talk with the leader of the IMAGO CHRISTI DISCOVERY COURSE. It is an introductory spiritual formation course using the model of Teresa of Avila's Interior Castle using Tom Ashbrook's book Mansions of the Heart. I am listening to it on my walks, and I am saying, "AMEN!" all along the way. He is preaching to the choir. I love it. (Parenthetically, I am sure people on the street think I am mentally ill.)
I want to meet with this director to see how our movement can officially partner with him. I am very excited. I am not going to be afraid. I am talking to so many people in our movement, and it can be intimidating. I just encountered ONE ego in the midst of the talking. No excitement about what we are doing. "My husband and I are superior" attitude in the email. It was a little unnerving for me, but God has replaced it with 99% of our movement that is so EXCITED and HELPFUL. I have a great team of four people. One is a dynamo of a worker. He spends one day a week looking at resources for us. The other was the person who told me how IMAGO CHRISTI changed her life. The other is wise and helpful. Now I have pulled in people who know the technical side of a podcast, and it is someone who interviewed me for something many years ago, and God brought him to mind, and he (and his boss) are really excited about this! Abiding is part of their year goals.
Then there is my friend, Eric. We dreamed in Sumas, Washington back in 2018 about this coming to fruition. I kept telling him that he is the one who can make it happen more than me because I am just a spiritual director to people because "eliciting change on the individual level" is my jam. Now, we are in CAHOOTS. He has more of a voice with the big-wigs. I have more of the experience of working with people in abiding for the last 40 years.
In fact, I was thinking about my own "TIMELINE" of growth, and it was on Lake Washington in September of 1983 where God radically changed my life after a breakdown. Romans 8 spoke to me big time. "Nothing can separate me from the love of God." And the note I had next to my bed, "God loves me no matter what I do for him today." (Parenthetically, the husband of the couple who housed me on Lake Washington when I fled from my spiritual abusive situation just died two days ago. I will ALWAYS be thankful for them taking me in.) Then, I led those women through the "Year of Abiding Discipleship" in the Upper Room of the Law's house (1985-1986). Always been my life theme and my "drum to tap" since my breakdown. "Abiding in Christ is the end of self-effort." from my counselor, Pearl Tadema. Thank you!
That is 15 minutes for me. I am out.

Sunday Morning Freewritea
I am just back from a walk with my Georgie along Jackson Frazier. One thing I have learned is that I need to get up and moving. It is a rest day, and this brings me great rest. Today is a blue sky, spring starting to blossom kind of day. It is a very short walk around this wetland, but it is so fulfilling. Open and wide sky. Birds flying, singing, settled into ponds of cold water. Ahhh.
I never tire of talking to my guy. Everything under the literal sun on our little foray. I loved it.
Prior to that, I had extended time with God that was lovely. I also did a bit of reading of Punkmonk by Andy Freeman and Pete Grieg and Sacred Rhythms by Ruth Haley Barton. People have raved about that book, and I am glad it is there. It is a good gateway into creating space for God. I love reading about anyone's journey though.
Still kicking around the idea of doing podcasts for our Movement that highlight people's journey to a deeper experience of God, and how it overflowed into action. I am asking God to drop something in my lap that will make a clear path. I don't need to be the one to do it either. I want to be part of a revolution in our Movement, but I certainly don't want to necessarily be the face of it.
After that extended time, I spent time with about 40 others in a Centering Prayer time. He read a quote from a book that I loved. So I ordered the book. :) I am also doing another one in about six minutes with local people here. I know it is two in one morning, but I don't mind. This is often my day of rest. So I love spending it in this way.
I might take a bike ride in the afternoon because it will be in the 50s! WOW! Spring is just around the corner, and I could not be happier.
I think that I have my rhythm back. Fran asked me how I know, and I just know when I am overdoing it. It is like when I start to not feel right physically, I usually stop and cancel everything to rest. Consequently, I have not been physically sick for about seven years. I also do this spiritually. It is when I sense something is not right, or I am not living out of peace. I pull back and find the equilibrium between output and input. Consequently, I have not been "sick" in this way since I left our old church in 2006. That was my last big WAKE UP call. I am grateful. Before that, it had been many years.
Well, it is almost time for Centering Prayer time. BYE!

Saturday Morning Sabbath Freewrite
I give myself the option of having a Sabbath on Saturday or Sunday, depending on whether there is a wedding or activity on one or the other of the days.
So I looked at this day, 27th, my monthly birthday celebration, as a "clean calendar day." YAY! Then at 10:30 yesterday I get a Facbook message from a college friend whom I have not seen in probably 8 years.
"Hey, girl. I am driving down to Corvallis right now. Can you meet at 10 am for coffee?"
I am thinking that it is Friday, but if it is 10:30, she must mean TOMORROW.
Yep, it was TOMORROW. Or today.
I am really good at saying "NO" these days. But how do you say "NO" to someone you see once in a blue moon?
So there goes my Sabbath. So I will switch it to Sunday. I love the flexibility, but it means saying "NO" to something I was looking forward to, but I am determined to have one day a week for total rest.
Things that I have prayed about for SO MANY YEARS are coming together. I am not sure how they will come together, but they will. I am resigned to believe that I have a leadership role in this even though I would rather just sit back and "be a resource" and one-on-one companion of the movers and the shakers of the Movement. That is more my role in life: best friend to the president of my sorority, back up center to an All-American and Olympic Gold Medalist, etc.
But this week was Purim, and the story of Esther keeps going in my mind as I have prayed:
"And who knows but that you have come to your position for such a time as this?" (Esther 4:14 - I even played Esther in a play once, by the way.)
God keeps saying FLY. My spiritual director, Fran, says I AM CONFIDENT. But why is there still this little bird inside of me that wants to go back to the nest?
This morning, scripture in Lectio365 (or was it yesterday?) became my breath prayer:
OUT: DO NOT FEAR
IN: I AM WITH YOU
OUT: DO NOT BE DISMAYED
IN: I AM YOUR GOD (Isaiah 41:10)
God knows that fear, and he obviously knew that people would struggle with it. But Fran says that she hears me saying I am fearful, but she sees me walking in confidence. (As I skipped and danced on my walk with George yesterday, I sang, "I have confidence in sunshine. I have confidence in rain..." That song in The Sound of Music has been my song since I would sing it at the top of my lungs with Tara Rozelle when we were 6 years old!)
Well, here is my 15-minute bell, and I must go for a walk and do some Pilates!

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This book makes me want to visit Savannah!
According to Wikipedia:
"The book's plot is based on real-life events that occurred in the 1980s and is classified as non-fiction. Because it reads like a novel (and rearranges the sequence of true events in time), it is sometimes referred to as a "non-fiction novel."
Although the book's timeline is set to coincide with the entire saga of Jim Williams' arrest and four trials for murder, in reality, Berendt did not meet Williams for the first time until 1982 — after the millionaire had already been convicted of murder the first time and released pending appeal. Berendt also did not move to Savannah to collect material for his book until 1985 — after Williams' second conviction for the murder. Williams was a free man and living in Mercer House during Berendt's five years in Savannah."
The author paints such a colorful picture of the city and its people.
Next up: the Clint Eastwood film based on the book!

The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie

The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I had an inkling of who may have "done it," and I was right! Christie is a master storyteller, and I loved this first foray into a Poirot mystery even though I am not a big fan of murder mysteries.
The narration was perfect too.

WEDNESDAY FREEWRITE
I think I am going to just write. I am really tired right now. I don't know why, but I think I will take another walk and then get in bed. This is my rest day before a very busy day tomorrow, starting at 5 am with a call with a team of people on Abiding. Then another one at 7 am with a guy in my subgroup on Abiding. Then I have a walk at Finley Wildlife Refuge with Julie, another spiritual director from Springfield. Then I have a Centering Prayer group with a book discussion afterward. Then I lead Pilates. Then we have dinner with John and Katherine. That is the thing I am most looking forward to.
I did OK leading the Jesus and the Disinherited discussion. I think this might be my last year leading. It is a lot of time preparing for the book discussions, and I feel like I need to make way for some other things in my life. So, I might ask another person in the group to take the lead. I am not sure.
I don't know if I will last writing this the full fifteen minutes. It is beautiful outside.
I had such a pleasant time with R and R yesterday. Those are the types of things I love to do, one-on-one conversations with people. I would really love to read the Renovare books and just discuss them with just one other person.
Oh, the sunshine is calling me. I am going to cut this freewrite really short! BYE!
Oh, by the way, I finished my 1084 miles up the UK Island! Here is my final postcard:

Monday Morning Freewrite
I have my timer set for 12 minutes. I have a spiritual direction appointment this morning. I postponed by 7 am one because I slept 8 hours last night (after napping in the early evening for 1 hour). That is usually a good indication that I am coming down with something. I have not had a full-blown cold in probably 7-8 years. So, I always like to nip it in the bud and rest. I took some Day Quill, and I feel much better. Still a bit achy in my joints.
I also have an appointment to get my stitches removed at 10:30. So, I will limit my time to 1 hour. I know most directors only have 1-hour appointments, but I am working toward it. After 40+ years of discipling women with a 2-hour appointment, it is so ingrained in me to go longer than the hour. When I do the Spiritual Exercises appointments, it is always 1 hour, but that is because it is just about the Exercises. So there you go.
I do feel better than I did two hours ago. So that is a good thing. I rested all day yesterday. It was probably my lowest exercise day since I broke my leg in 2019. It was weird, but I finished reading two books I have had hanging over my head.
Speaking of books, after getting a book list two weeks ago for my OMS Year of Preparation, and purchasing the books, they changed one of the books. So, I am a bit bummed, and I guess that the majority rules because no one else had received their books yet. Oh well, the book we are reading instead is the "pop" book of the years. I have not read it because my best friend read it, and it is basic stuff that we learned when we were 20 years old, but I realize, for most people, this is all new things to be learning. So, I will go with the majority, and I really need to read it so I can recommend it.
My time is running out. See you later!
Adding on to my timer for another Monday morning freewrite:
Back for another round since my freewrite was only 10 minutes. I had my direction appointment. I tried to stop the time at one hour, but it did not work, and we went 25 minutes over. I am going to try to do better next time. This is my number one area of growth as a director. I feel really good about my time with my directees though. It has been SO FULFILLING. It is where I am supposed to be at this stage of my life.
George and I were just laughing about the word: Cymbrogi (pronounced KOOM-bro-gee). It means "fellow countrymen" "companions of the heart." This is exactly what I have been looking for since it came out as a theme with Mike during his direction through my second time through the Exercises! I do have individual companions of the heart, but I don't have a group who are this way. I would say Kim, George, Debbie are most this way in my life. George and I just laughed because the word is a funny Celtic word, but I love how it just rolls off your tongue: KOOM-bro-gee! I have to have one for my year of preparation through the Order of the Mustard Seed. I have that everyday with George, and I have it at least monthly with Kim, and I could probably have it regularly with Debbie if I just asked, but I don't think I could have them all together. So, I need to ask Scott if that is OK to have three separate people that I would not necessarily be able to gather together.
I already said earlier this morning that they changed the books, but I found out that the book they changed it to is at the library, and I don't think it is a super popular book. So, I should be able to have a long-term check out of it, and I am sure I could borrow it from Nicole.
Speaking of Nicole, I had to move our time on Friday because we are saying good-bye to D. She flies out to the Middle East late Friday night. So she is going to have an open house. I heard from N while I was in my direction appointment. I also heard from my boss who said I did not submit my timesheet, but I checked, and I DID! I am not sure why he thought I did not.
All that said, I think my biggest stress this morning was getting these stitches out! I think it has been nagging me since Friday, and I felt like a burden to my nurse friends. The guy who did it was so gentle and kind, and I had a wonderful time of breathing through the pain and being in God's presence in the midst of it because a couple of those stitches really hurt to be removed. BUT I felt such relief, and then I felt joy as I used my Jane Austen band-aid to cover up the wound. LOL! So, my somewhat more turbulent morning (because my mornings are super mellow and not stressful about 99.9% of the time).

Pilgrimage to Mt. St. Michel
It has been great fun, and I highly recommend it. Next month, Chris will be partnering with CORVALLIS native, Karin Kibby, who lives in Italy. That should be fun too.
Wednesday Morning Freewrite
I've been up since 12:45 am because I fell asleep at 6:45! My goodness. I was going to just take a little cat nap so that we could watch Scarlet and the Duke on PBS, but I fell fast asleep for my usual six hours. ACK!
Well, I have had an EARLY morning time with God and read a couple of chapters in two different books. Now, I am doing another freewrite. It will be an early night tonight, but the nice thing is that I don't have any "people" obligations today. So I can refuel my introverted heart/soul/mind and also have some more reading time. I also plan on a nice long bike ride as it is not going to rain today. It won't be sunny, but I will take that. It might snow next week. So I want to get as much riding time in as possible.
Yesterday was full, but it was FULLfilling. I had a lovely time with God. Then I had a long hospital hill walk (with the labyrinth). Then I met with a girl from South Korea over ZOOM. I usually meet with Arab women, but I forgot to specify that in my conversant volunteer application. But the girl is so sweet. I love learning about South Korea. I had a conversant from there in the late 80s, but I forget all about it, and I have been to Asia several times since then. So it is fun.
Then, I had something, but I cannot remember what it was. I went for a bike ride to meet with Kim, and even though I felt like it was time to pull in a bit after so much people time over the last two weeks, it was LIFE-GIVING. Kim is my soul-friend, next to George. So, we walked in the beautiful sunshine on to the OSU Library quad, and it was lovely. I was going to continue my bike ride, but Kim gave me TWO long sleeve red tunics! Why did she get Land's End TALL tunics? I will have to ask her about that because they were too long for her. So she gave them to me, and the sleeves are long enough! I am so excited about this as I LOVE RED, and I don't have any non-turtleneck red sweaters or shirts! Blessings!
After this, I rolled, stretched, rested. I had hit my step goal with Kim, and I did 3.22 on my bike and called it a day.
The biggest desolation of the day was having TOO MANY spoonfuls of Nutella! LOL! I have the hardest time not dipping into that jar.
I did really well on the rest of my eating and ended up not going over my points for maintaining. On Friday, I will start another 5% of loss since I have maintained this one for three months of that day. I am FINE with where I am right now, but I want to get a bit lower to have "wiggle room" for some fun things coming up like my Valentine's trip to the coast with my honey. There are NO RESTAURANTS open, but we got a kitchenette at a great price. We also want to take another overseas trip as soon as the countries open up.
There is my timer. BYE!

Tuesday Morning Freewrite
![]() |
| D's Graduation Party - Master's in Public Health Nursing |
Haven't done a freewrite since Thursday because on Thursday morning, I sliced my index finger in a lime cutting accident. So, I have stitches, but I finished writing an eight-page paper yesterday. So I have gotten quite used to typing with a wrapped index finger these days. LOL!
We had a going-away party for D. It was such a nice time of charcuterie, pictures with the evening light, steak, chicken, Middle Eastern food, and yummy fellowship with those I love. So good.
I did start fading about 8:45 and managed to stay another 45 minutes after that. :) Those young people can stay up so much later than me.
So, I ate too much! I am three months of maintaining my 10% weight loss. So, I think I will go with another 5% as I am anticipating some travel coming soon.
I did not feel super well yesterday. I think my body just needed a rest day. So I took one short walk. That was it. I feel much better today. I wish I could have changed my Exercise ring though. I have to remember to reduce it on rest days (that I RARELY take and should).
I start the Order of the Mustard Seed Year of Preparation Cohort on Saturday and am excited. There is a person from Scotland (in Portland, OR), England (in CA), South Africa (in CA), and three Americans from the Pacific Northwest. Three men. Three women. Great fun ahead.
Today, I also start my first conversation with a partner from South Korea. I did not specify the Middle East. I forgot about it on my application. I have not had one from there since the 80s! I also walk with Kim. Then I teach Pilates.
Speaking of Pilates, I had a student from 2018 contact me. She wants me to teach Pilates classes for a Wellness business she is starting. She said she hated exercise until she was in my class. She said I made it FUN! Well, that was unexpected and encouraging. I have a ton of videos. So, that shouldn't be a problem.
I love my class this term. It is just 8 women. I like the small number. I am finally all caught up on all the university videos I needed to watch. So all I have to do is teach my class on Tuesdays/Thursdays and grade 8 Cognitive Learning Assignments!
I came to a big realization recently. When I had gone through 8 hours of Enneagram training of my first week of classes, I went from learning (ending at 3 pm) to teaching (starting at 3 pm) and moving my body. It was the BEST thing to do after all that HEAD/HEART triad work of the Enneagram. I put my body into it, and I also went into my GQ (Gut/Body Triad) Type 8 teaching mode rather than being taught (mostly IQ Type 5 with a little bit of HQ Type 2 when we met in small groups). I need some BODY TIME. Totally gave me life and brought me back into balance.
There goes the timer. Will try to do more of this in the coming weeks.

2020 Reading Wrap Up
These are a combined list of questions from Read 52 Books in 52 Weeks. She changed it this year.
How many books did you read? 68Which book would you recommend everyone read:
Did you discover any "new to you" authors?
My goal was to get through all the book lists for the Book Babes Book Club, the Renovare Book Club, Spiritual Direction tests, and last but not least, the 1000 Book to Read Before You Die list.
Where did your armchair travels take you?
Moscow, Russia, England, World War II Europe, France, Japan, Ireland, Central Valley California, Texas Samoa, All over America with John Steinbeck, Interior Castle of the Soul, Canada
Which books stood out, made an impression and/or stayed with you the longest? What did you learn from them?
Interior Castle - I had read her autobiography several years ago, but this is her seminal work, and it encouraged me to go on a deeper adventure in Centering Prayer, and I am glad I did.
Which book had the most original, most unique story?
The Golden Compass - So unusual. The writing is near-perfect.
Which book did you like the least and why?
The Buddha in the Attic - Just a running list of all these Japanese immigrants to California. NO character development. I am so surprised by anyone who would like this book.
68. The Ghost Writer
I see why Roth won awards. Very good writing. It was not super engaging for me though.
Summary: The Ghost Writer introduces Nathan Zuckerman in the 1950s, a budding writer infatuated with the great books, discovering the contradictory claims of literature and experience while an overnight guest in the secluded New England farmhouse of his idol, E. I. Lonoff.
At Lonoff's, Zuckerman meets Amy Bellette, a haunting young woman of indeterminate foreign background who turns out to be a former student of Lonoff's and who may also have been his mistress. Zuckerman, with his active, youthful imagination, wonders if she could be the paradigmatic victim of Nazi persecution. If she were, it might change his life.
The first volume in the Zuckerman Bound trilogy and epilogue, The Ghost Writer is about the tensions between literature and life, artistic truthfulness and conventional decency - and about those implacable practitioners who live with the consequences of sacrificing one for the other.
67. The Splendid and The Vile
I forgot this review in 2020
The Splendid and the Vile: A Saga of Churchill, Family, and Defiance During the Blitz by Erik LarsonMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
The newest book by Erik Larson. This guy never misses. It is excellent. It is history and very personal. In 1940-41, 44,652 civilians died and 52,370 were injured in the Blitz! Of those dead, 5,626 were children. Much of it was Churchill's pleas for Roosevelt to get America involved. This would not happen until the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

Sunday (Early) Morning Freewrite: My Compass 2020 Review
Let's try a new type for the NEW year (at least for this freewrite because I will probably forget the new one I am using in future freewrites). I have in my Rule of Life to do a freewrite at least once a week. So, here is my first one for 2021.
Here is a screenshot of the yearly review using
YearCompass | The booklet that helps close your year and plan the next one.
It was a very good year for me. I still had to continue to work through the difficult thing that happened to me in December of 2019, but I kept working through it, and I "prayed to the PEACE" during my Advent retreat. It ended with a very dramatic conclusion as I drove over a bridge on the way back home from Mt. Angel Abbey. I really sensed a closure that I had not sensed prior to that.
By the way, I am up at 1:19 am in the morning. I fell fast asleep at about 9 pm, and I woke up thinking it was morning, and I had slept enough at 11:45! I could not go back to sleep. Ironically, George was awake next to me, but I did not know it until he got up saying that his stomach was churning. He has been up for a long time reading. Paul came home from work at 1 am, and Michael was still up. So the whole family is up at 1:21 am!
After this freewrite, I will go ahead and do a quick reading wrap up of the year. I have to check and see which books I did not include here yet.
I did a 90 minute Pilates/Barre class on New Year's Eve that was great. I was not even sore the next day, and I want to keep the strength I gained from doing all those Pilates videos for FSF. It took me two whole days to upload them on to the media site for OSU! I know it would have been less time had I done all my videos on an iPhone and uploaded them, but I did not get my iPhone until December 23. I will do the remaining ones on my iPhone. That is better.
I have a big week ahead of me:
1) iMOS (Motions of the Soul) Enneagram training Tuesday - Friday from 7:15 am - 3:00 pm.
2) Pilates 194 Tuesday/Thursday 3-3:50 pm (trying an afternoon teaching schedule and may like that better)
3) International Mom and Baby Group Teaching on "Person of Peace" Wednesday 3-3:45 pm
4) Prayer with M people 7:30-9:00 pm Friday
I am doing Spiritual Direction every other week now. That way I can do things on the off week instead of having stops and starts because of directees sprinkled throughout the day. I like that better.
Well, I am going to work on my "Reading Wrap Up" now. Stay tuned.

Sunday Morning Freewrite
The SUN just started to shine through the window on what, at the beginning of my Centering Prayer time (20 min) was only gloom and fog. What a great end to a more focused Centering time than I have had over the last two weeks. I found myself being very distracted during Centering Prayer by all the Pilates videos I have had to make. I owe the University 30 hours of work because I was furloughed for one of my classes and not the other. I didn't find out about it until November. I couldn't start the videos until my biopsy for melanoma healed because it was on my bottom, and I could not do the three rolling exercises in the Pilates routine. So, I started the adventure on November 27th. I have done 14:40 so far. I will need to do 5:20 more. The other ten hours are given to me for the uploading and descriptions attached to my videos. It is doing 12 weeks worth of a Pilates class in four weeks (due date is December 31).
The silver lining: I am getting back in Pilates shape. It is one thing to do it on your own at home and another thing to be in shape to do instruction for an Advanced Pilates class. I did that yesterday, and I always say that the level between Intermediate and Advanced goes up ASTRONOMICALLY! So, I was so tired yesterday. I had the family go shopping for gifts and cars (Michael's car was totaled, and Paul has not gotten around to getting one since he works so close to home) for three hours so I could have uninterrupted time in videos. Sadly, someone dropped in on me texting me and calling me to tell me they were in my driveway. Another friend called after not hearing from him for probably two years. So, I had to do my video in two parts and then put it in a movie editor and trim and put them together. I do love learning new things, but it prolonged my time, and I had a limited amount with them gone.
All that said, when they came home they were ready to go get our Christmas trees. I had a moment in the kitchen where I could feel myself about to burst into tears and crawl into bed from the stress of this whole thing and the tiredness of my body when I CAUGHT MYSELF IN THE ACT! It was the coolest thing. (The sun is shining more and more. God always speaks to me with the sun breaking through clouds and shining into windows - So I am going with this freewrite.) I didn't stuff it, but there was this overwhelming sense of God's presence with me. God's protection of me - my body, my soul, my mind, my spirit. I wasn't "stuffing it and sucking it up and gutting it out for the family." Nor did I get emotional and crawl into a hole hoping that my family would understand. I could have done that, and they would have understood. We could have postponed but rain was on the horizon for the only other day we could do it. But there was this shift. There was an acknowledgment of how tired I was, but there was this shift to wanting to go. I was standing there in the kitchen on the verge of losing it and then I wasn't, but I didn't stuff it either. It is hard to explain.
In the car, filled with joy, I whizzed down Walnut Blvd. with the people I am most in love with and bring me the most life, noticing the gorgeous color of the blue sky meeting forested hills, listening to Kenny Rogers' rendition of "Children Go Where I Send Thee" (man, it is GOOD), and just enjoying life STRESS-FREE.
Our 23rd Trip to Donovan's Tree Farm was filled with the 23rd installment of life-giving joy. I asked about Mr. Donovan, and as I did, he drove up on an ATV with a hearty hello (he knows us after 23 trips) and gave us a personal tour of his latest pottery pieces, and I bought a bowl with the deepest and most beautiful color of green I have ever seen.
