This was quite LONG (500+ pages), but it helped me get a glimpse into his tortured life. I believe he suffered from bipolar disorder that devolved into psychosis the last 18 months of his life.
He had quite a zealous faith in his early years, but he threw it all away. My heart ached for him in the first half of the book. Then he made me mad at how manipulative he was with his brother, Theo (who was a classic enabler)! He got quite narcissistic toward the end.
What creativity though! I love his paintings so much. I have a tapestry of his last painting hanging over my fireplace and my journal cover is of Starry Night.
I read this in preparation for our trip to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam in three days. It is a dream, and last time we were there, we opted for another lifelong dream of going to Corrie Ten Boom's Hiding Place. I am so glad we are going back there to fulfill another dream.
