Here is why James Mustich thinks it should be one of the 1000 Books You Read Before You Die:
Waugh’s comic novels are generally distinguished by their combination of hilarity and craftsmanship: They are savagely funny, impeccably well written, and flawlessly plotted. One of the best examples of his artistry is The Loved One, a perfect little macabre concoction that lampoons what was once famously called “the American way of death.” Waugh’s black comedy received a notable rave from Wolcott Gibbs, who wrote in The New Yorker, “Never before that I can remember has a talent of such austere and classic design been applied to such monstrous vulgarities. . . . It is certainly a work of art, as rich and subtle and unnerving as anything its author has ever done.”
